Pre-Operative Instructions

Patient Education Guide
Click on the drop down menu below for important information regarding your hospital stay

  • Preoperative testing is required before this procedure. It is important for all of your testing to be completed at least 72 hours prior to your surgery date. All results should be faxed to our Pre-admission Center at 410-427-2060. If possible bring a copy of your history and physical, lab work, and any other test done. Please call 410-337-1058 if you have any questions.
  • State law requires that we ask all patients admitted to the medical center if they have an Advanced Directive or living will. If you do have an Advanced Directive, please bring a copy of it with you.
  • Check with your primary doctor regarding which medications should be taken the day of surgery. Please bring all your medications with you. It is helpful to write down all your medications, the dosage, and frequency of the medications that you take on a regular basis.
  • Do not eat anything after 12 midnight the night before surgery. This includes gum, lifesavers, candy and mints. You may take your medications the day of surgery with a small sip of water if your doctor has told you to take them.
  • Do not bring valuables to the hospital. Wear glasses not contact lenses. Remove all jewelry, including ALL body piercing.
  • Please plan to arrive at the hospital 2 hours before surgery.
  • Parking is available in the O'Dea Garage or the surface lot across. Click here for more parking information.
  • Surgical Services is located on the ground floor. Enter the main entrance of the medical center and front desk personnel will guide you to Surgical Services.
  • You must have someone drive you home after surgery. You may not call a taxi unless there is a responsible adult to accompany you. Someone should stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.

Please do not hesitate to call 410-337-1058 between the hours of 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. if you have questions. Thank you for choosing St. Joseph Medical Center.
