Philosophy Statement

St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, Inc., through the efforts of its Board members and staff, seeks the philanthropic support of the community served by St. Joseph Medical Center. A subsidiary of St. Joseph Medical Center and a member of Catholic Health Initiatives, St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation was founded by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia and the St. Joseph Medical Center Board of Directors. Healthcare for all of God’s people, especially the poor, underserved and elderly, remains an important pledge of St. Joseph Medical Center and, thus, the Foundation.

As responsible stewards, we recognize the need to safeguard the integrity of our mission while maintaining economic viability through creatively seeking increased philanthropic support. To assure continued services to the communities served by St. Joseph Medical Center, the Foundation will cultivate new and lasting relationships with prospective donors and provide stewardship to already generous benefactors. We participate in and are committed to this Mission through advocating Catholic healthcare and demonstrating ethical practices.

Charitable Giving

St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation invites individuals, corporations, organizations and foundations to participate in supporting St. Joseph Medical Center’s programs and services through charitable giving. Gifts may be made in the form of cash or appreciated property, such as securities, collections and real estate. Bequests stipulate, through the will, the transfer of assets at death. Multi-year pledges are another option. Contributions may be restricted to programs, services or capital projects (as agreed upon by the donor and medical center) or unrestricted, which are then directed by the Board of Directors based on the medical center's strategic priorities.

Cardinal William H. Keeler Spiritual Center

The spiritual heart of St. Joseph Medical Center is its Chapel. Since 1965, the Chapel has welcomed patients, families, caregivers and medical staff to reflect, worship and seek comfort within its sacred space.

While significant renovations have occurred in other areas of the medical center, the Chapel remained as originally designed with minimal modifications until May 1, 2008 when it was closed for upgrades and renovations. When the Chapel reopens in December, 2008 it will be prominently located in spirit and in space in the new atrium at the heart of the new Cardinal William H. Keeler Spiritual Center at St. Joseph.

Named in honor of Cardinal Keeler, the Keeler Spiritual Center will house the Chapel, Meditation Garden, Interfaith Prayer Room and Spiritual Care suite.

Extensive renovations are underway to complete each facet of the project. In the Chapel, new lighting and audio will enhance worship and improve images and sound to the services via closed circuit TV in patient rooms. The original, historic stained-glass windows will be restored and preserved and a specially commissioned San Damiano cross will grace the Chapel altar. The Meditation Garden adjacent to the Chapel will provide a tranquil place for rest and refl ection amidst new beautiful plantings and natural elements. The addition of an Interfaith Prayer Room ensures that people of all faiths can worship in a space respectful of their personal traditions.

We invite patients, staff, physicians and visitors to support this signifi cant project which must be fully funded through philanthropy. Gifts can be made in honor or in memory of a family member, caregiver, or spiritual mentor.

Planned Giving

Planned giving focuses on the needs and preferences of our supporters as well as the needs of the medical center. It is what we like to call a “donor-centered” service program.

Similar to other types of giving, planned gifts provide St. Joseph Medical Center with the funds that we need to pursue our mission. However, through planned giving, our donors benefit in a variety of ways beyond “normal” giving.

Potential benefits to the donor:

Current income tax deduction
Avoidance of capital gains tax on contributions of appreciated long-term securities or property
Gifts can be given at a time and in a way that best suit the needs of the donors and do not jeopardize their financial security
Increased income stream for the donor or income beneficiaries
Estate tax deduction

Perhaps most importantly, donors take great pride in their ability to make the size gift they always wanted to be able to give.

Planned gifts range from very simple to fairly sophisticated. Some are current gifts while most are deferred to a future time. They are designed to be flexible and can be molded to meet the donor's preferences. In addition to providing funds to St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, planned gifts can help a donor save for retirement, create an educational fund for a child or care for an aging parent.
