The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is divided into two units: the inpatient PACU, for inpatients or morning admission patients; and the outpatient PACU, called ASU PACU, for ambulatory surgery patients. Both PACUs are equipped for cardiac and invasive patient monitoring. Ventilators and emergency equipment also are available.
The Inpatient PACU has 12 patient units. Inpatients receiving general anesthesia and those receiving local anesthesia with standby anesthesia are admitted to this area. Patients receiving IV regionals and spinals also come to PACU. Patients receiving only local anesthesia may return directly to their medical center room or may come to PACU at their surgeon's request.
The ratio of patients to nurses usually is two to one. The PACU is currently unable to isolate patients requiring respiratory isolation. Patients must meet discharge criteria and-or be discharged to their medical center room by an anesthesiologist.
Cardioversions for inpatients are performed in the inpatient PACU. Cardioversions for outpatients are performed in the outpatient PACU. The cardiologist must contact the anesthesiologist, who checks with the PACU staff to determine the procedure time. An anesthesiologist must be present for a cardioversion. Elective cardioversions should be scheduled through the Posting Office.
The ASU PACU has 15 units for patients on stretchers, one isolation unit and a step down unit. Outpatients come to the ASU PACU regardless of the type of anesthesia they have received. Patients remain on stretchers until they are able to sit up without being nauseated; patients are then ambulated to the step down area located in an adjacent area of the ASU PACU to continue the recovery process until discharge. The patient's family, preferably one or two persons, are welcome to stay with the patient in this area.
Tea, coffee, juice, soda and crackers are offered to patients. Discharge instructions are given to the patient before discharge. Patients are seen and discharged by an anesthesiologist with written discharge order from their surgeon.
